Short videos as supplementary learning materials for self-directed learning
The Technical Drawing course is structured as a lab. Before the lab begins, students are given an introduction to technical drawing, which aims to spark their interest in this tool and highlight the importance of mastering this “language of engineering.” During the lab sessions, students are provided with the tools to read and create technical drawings. They are expected to work through the technical content on their own, which is then applied in the lab exercises. As new supplementary learning materials, short videos were created for the practice assignments; these demonstrate, for example, a hand-drawn sketch of a simple machine part based on a model. Other short videos showcase similar tasks or components, provide important tips, and explain possible solutions.
Overall, the videos and the course recording represent a qualitative improvement of the course as a whole, particularly with regard to the emphasis on various learning channels, location-independent learning, and the high degree of self-directed learning.
The short videos were produced in collaboration between the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, the Center for University Didactics and Quality Management in Teaching, and the Computer Center.
The instructional videos received special recognition by winning the 2013 podcampus competition.
