Diversity-Sensitive Teaching

  • Be a role model yourself.
  • Avoid stereotypes.
  • Include women and men in different roles, and use gender-inclusive language in both speech and writing.
  • Use methods that are gender-inclusive, such as project-based or group work.
  • Ensure that both genders can participate equally in classroom activities.
  • Provide positive feedback to both genders equally.
  • Create special incentives for your students (staff members) to engage in activities in fields that are typically associated with the opposite gender.
  • Reflect on your behavior with regard to gender equity.
  • Find out where you can get advice and expertise on issues in this area.
  • Make sure that the support programs you offer are free of stereotypical assumptions.

A free e-learning tool on the topic of “Diversity Competence in Higher Education” is available here under the title “DiVers.” ““DiVers” was developed by the University of Cologne and RWTH Aachen University and consists of a self-assessment test, individual learning modules, and a glossary.
